The goal of the work behind Mendocino Coast Progressive Action Network is to build ongoing, sustainable progressive power in Fort Bragg, power than can be utilized and directed as needed. And that is the purpose behind the process that was utilized to choose the slate of Mary Rose Kaczorowski and Tess Albin-Smith for Fort Bragg City Council.
So please Bullet Vote (vote ONLY for) Mary Rose Kaczorowski and Tess-Albin Smith (write-in)! (In this case, Bullet Vote means to use only two of your votes. Let the other vote(s) be an "undervote". It is legal and it doesn't spoil your ballot. For more on Bullet Voting, see this post.)
Why Mary Rose and Tess?
1. All eleven candidates for Fort Bragg City Council were emailed the Progressive Values Candidate Questionnaire. Of that eleven, only Mary Rose and Tess answered the questionnaire. Furthermore, they answered it the same day they received it, proving it was not long. Two email reminders were sent to the remaining candidates. None chose to respond, acknowledge, or fill out the questionnaire. You can see Mary Rose's and Tess' answers here.
2. The results were published and emailed to MCPAN's supporter list, where folks were given the option to participate in a Ranked-Choice Voting straw poll to determine who MCPAN should support as a progressive slate for Fort Bragg City Council.
3. The first question on that poll was "Should candidates who did not respond to the Progressive Values Candidate Questionnaire be considered for promotion by MCPAN?" 70% of respondents said "no", leaving only Mary Rose and Tess.
4. Because both Mary Rose's and Tess' answers to the questionnaire aligned with progressive values; they were the only two who responded to the questionnaire; and there are a total of three seats, they became the slate, by default.
5. While there are one or two other candidates whom I might guess hold progressive values, because they could not see clear to fill out a very simple questionnaire, we can't know for sure. And it seems 70% of the straw poll respondents agreed with my position: If you're not willing to publicly state and stand behind your progressive values, then why should you deserve promotion by a progressive effort?
I'll be honest: While each election is an opportunity to get progressives in power, the building of sustained progressive voter power is more important than any single local election. What the candidates were asked to do was simple and authentic: Let us know who you are.
Well, maybe they did.
Bullet Vote Mary Rose and Tess.
P.S. What about the other race with Lindy Peters and Alberto Aldaco? Neither responded to the questionnaire, and Alberto dropped out anyway. So Lindy is essentially guaranteed the win. That does not mean, however, that you should vote for him. I, personally, will be leaving that race blank. So, when I say Bullet Vote Mary Rose and Tess, that means I will be using only two of my four available votes.
